An automobile or car club is a group of people who share common interests i.e. love for cars and activities related to them. Since the time people started owning cars, the car clubs were formed. In early days car clubs were a means of gathering, often to discuss cars and take part in certain car sports. But as time has progressed the auto clubs have new feathers added to their features. At present, some car clubs indulge themselves in various social services related to automobiles such as providing emergency road service assistance with planning trips and making reservations, auto insurance and related services. Some of the auto clubs are non-profit organizations which are run by the committee members and at times with the support of outsiders. For instance the American Automobile Association which has its national headquarters at Lake Mary in Florida is a not-for profit organization that started in 1902. But there are other larger automobile groups which are run as paid businesses by salaried employees. The Ferrari Owners Club is club that functions as a big business group.
Nowadays people have different reasons to join an auto club. There are some who are genuinely enthusiastic about cars while there are others who view it as an opportunity to socialize or to draw certain benefits such as the publications offered with memberships which contain photographs, messages from other members, service and parts advice, items and vehicles wanted and or for sale, and historical material of interest to the membership. The auto clubs also organize some meets and gatherings in which interested non-members and their vehicles are also welcomed.
At present auto clubs have also opened online. These are web based auto clubs that charge no dues and provide instant messaging services, file storage and photo sharing. Unlike the traditional clubs, the online clubs do not issue any printed publications, there is no such treasury and elected officer governing structures. Also there are hardly any meets of online auto clubs. The development of such clubs has lead to a negative impact on the local clubs in the area.
